Backstage Beauty Report: How to Get the Rosy Cheeks From the Isabel Marant Show
“They don’t like makeup here,” joked the makeup artist Lisa Butler backstage at Isabel Marant’s fall/winter 2017 show. Her point: The beauty look for this season’s collection was meant to seem as though the models’ fresh, glowing complexions and rosy pinched cheeks were effortlessly, makeup free.
To accomplish this “no-makeup makeup” look given to an all-age cast of models that included fashion vets like Carolyn Murphy and Amber Valletta (as well as up-and-comers like Lineisy Montero), Butler started by hydrating the skin itself. “You want to feed the skin as much as possible,” she said, holding up a tube of Geranium and Thistle Rebalancing Day Cream by the British organic brand Pai. “If you start with healthy skin, it means there’s less you have to put on,” she said.
She then used tinted lip balms — Burt’s Bees lip crayons, for their sheer, sheen quality — on both the models’ lips and their cheeks. For a subtle shade of pink that suits one’s own complexion, Butler suggested actually pinching the cheeks, then matching the lip balm color to that shade.
